Yes, the 2023 Spokane to Sandpoint has been cancelled.
Quite simply, there weren’t enough teams. We expected a late surge of registrations based on general race registration trends as well as on indications we got from direct communication with various groups and past participants. In the last month we’ve gotten precisely zero. We can dissect the various reasons why teams aren’t registering (and we have), but in the end it doesn’t really matter. Without enough teams providing a minimum budget and supply of volunteers, the race can’t safely or satisfactorily function (I mean, you DO want a portapot at each exchange, right?).
NxNW is shifting all of its focus to Inland Relay in September. We think this event will be a great option for the relay-loving and relay-curious alike. By being a one-day event, it dramatically lowers the complexity for the participants and race crew, but still has all the camaraderie and hijinks you would normally see rolling down the road.
We’ll be reassessing S2S this fall. It may be done, it may be altered to something else, but it’ll always be in our hearts and our old running shoes we just can’t seem to let go of.
